Several techniques have been proposed to augment the width of the alveolar crest when buccal defects compromise implant installation. Augmentation may be performed prior to implant placement or concomitantly when a defect occurs after installation.

In this lecture, data from experimental studies are presented to clarify healing in several different situations. This knowledge will guide surgical procedures and aid in choosing the best possible material.
